The theme of their Summer Resort 2016 collection is ‘out of the closet’. It takes inspiration from Afghanistan. The collection signifies suppressing the age old traditions and accepting the bold look but keeping intact the essence of simplicity. It creates a myriad of distinct embroidery and enigmatic hand detailing combined with a modern silhouette. Minimalistic subdued colour chemistry merge to create alchemy. It emphasizes and evokes a sense of survival attitude and mesmerizing hidden luxury as silk is covered with linen and khadi.

As mentioned earlier, while, Taruni went on to the UK to pursue a Master’s Degree in Fashion Design. Meanwhile, Shubham was exploring India, working with handloom weavers who could weave textiles using organic and eco-friendly yarns like Khadi.

Apart from this, Taruni also got the opportunity to visit and research other countries like Paris, Belgium, Amsterdam etc. After researching in various countries including India, they knew a bit about the styles that existed and the things towards which people have an eye. As a designer, the quality to be different than what is existing and to be out of the box, the style had to drift from the existent.

Being explorative and unique, the idea came to them of exploring Afghanistan which became the key factor in being part of their inspiration. The beauty just fascinated them at a glance. They first started studying a bit about the history, then about the present as well.

Under Taliban rule, from 1996, up until 2001, women were not allowed to work and were forbidden from venturing outside the home without a male escort.

Afghan women who defy traditional gender roles and speak out against the oppression of women are routinely subject to threats, intimidation and assassination. This was generally facilitated with acid attacks that led to the result of deforming the shape. Now, this practice is not followed.

Taruni Goyal and Shubham Yadav thought that the silhouette will be simple but inspired from the deformity of the shape, will give rise to various new cuts and slits. This was one of the attractive feature of their collections. This was giving a modern look to the designs.

Also, the water in an ocean undergoes a similar experience when it touches the rocks. The flow of water is obstructed and water takes a unique shape around the rock. This also gives a deformed shape leading to unique cuts.

To add to this, the essence of simplicity was something that we wanted to hold on to. Hence, keeping that in mind, the colour palette was quite subtle and limited. It drew inspiration from the water, ocean and the rocks around them.

The main fabric was khadi, linen and cotton to highlight the aspect of eco fashion on one hand and featuring the texture of the rocks on the other hand. These textiles were woven on order to show the colour palette and texture relating to the inspiration.

In addition, the beauty of women that is hidden under the cloth, with which they cover their face was marvellous and needs to be noted. Hence, keeping this in mind, we thought of lining the garment with a luxurious fabric to emphasize on the hidden luxury. For this purpose, the garments were lined with silk.

While, Taruni was in the UK to pursue her post graduate course in fashion design and exploring international fashion. Meanwhile, Shubham was exploring India, working with handloom weavers who could weave textiles using organic and eco-friendly yarns like Khadi.

All this brought a significant transformation and allowed them to bring some fresh perspective to the artistic table, alongside honing their technical skills. They were able to gain knowledge and develop their aptitude and skills at a global level.

Another Phase Of Education

Taruni went on to the UK to pursue a Post Graduate course in Fashion Design from the Nottingham Trent University. She designed Spring Summer 2015 collection there.

The theme of the collection was “Cultural Amalgamation”.
It was based on experimentation with cloth and cut, combining elements of two beautiful countries, her native land of India and the UK, to portray a mix of Indian and Western fashion cultures. Using a combination of traditional motifs such as flowers, paisleys and brocades, the textiles and garments include subtle and limited colours with touches of embroidered embellishment and laser cutting.





















Taruni would like to name a few people whose support and cooperation made this photoshoot possible. Among them, were the amazing models, Momoka (Japan), Georgina (United Kingdom) and Saloni (India) and the talented photographer, April (China). All, being from different countries were justifying the theme of the collection “Cultural Amalgamation”. Taruni would like to thank all of them.

While Taruni was in the UK to pursue this course and to explore international fashion, she got an opportunity to showcase her work at the New Designers Exhibition in London. She also got an opportunity to visit Premier Vision in Paris, attend a presentation with Trends Union in Paris and visit Dries Van Noten in Antwerp and various places in Amsterdam.

The First Initiative Towards Fame

Now, they knew that the time of excessive hard work has begun and they started working towards coming up with their first collection- Summer Resort 2016.

After accomplishment of this collection and showing the pictures to the organisers of Asian Designer Week, ‘Shubham & Taruni’ saw much success in having been selected in it. It was a prestigious platform to be launching the brand and they were honoured to be selected from amongst the top five designers in the New Gen category. It was held on 7th and 8th May 2016 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.

Apart from the New Gen designers, they could share the stage with few big names in the industry like Rajdeep Ranawat, Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor, Saaj by Ankita Chaudhry and designers from all over Asia.

It was a very ironical kind of feeling with an amalgamation of nervousness and excitement to be part of a platform which they had always dreamt about. It was a pleasure to have their name announced on the stage and walk on the ramp with the models accompanied with the hooting by their friends and family.

Apart from the learning and networking experience that they gained in these days and reflecting on what they paradigm from those, they would also like to appreciate that they had the chance of being a part of the unique show along with a fabulous and supportive team of Asian Designer Week. Everyone, ranging from organisers, choreographers, models, graphic designers, makeup artist and hair stylist, music editors, the light and sound crew, the backstage team etc. were amazing. To name a few, first, they would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Anand Tikekar for helping them before, throughout and after the show and till date in everything, Mr. Swagat Ranjan and Mr. Lokesh Sharma for giving them an opportunity for the other shows too, Mr. Pranav Hamal for being an amazing choreographer throughout the show, Mr. Vivek Rawat, Mr. Robby Rawat, and the other designer participants too. They would like to thank everyone for appreciating their collection and being supportive throughout. They apologize if they are missing out on someone’s name.

This gave them immense opportunity to get accolade for their work and inspiration from the enquiries generated at the event and an opportunity to mingle with designers from other Asian countries.

They were fortunate enough to get applauses and publicity at the event. Their names also got featured twice in HT City along with their show stopper dress.

They have always desired to be among the most exclusive of cliques, that of hard-working and successful professionals. Hence, they were amidst driven individuals who strive to make a difference. This will help them create their niche in the international fashion stage to some extent.









The Commencement

The year 2015 ignited their resolve to build an essential foundation for their later endeavours. Therefore, the two came together and the journey of the brand ‘Shubham and Taruni’ began.

‘Shubham and Taruni’ is about creating inspirational, appealing and distinctive style, quality and value transcending the boundaries of reviving tradition and infusing an epitomized edge to express individuality, versatility and functionality. To create collections that meld simplicity and fun at the same time. Therefore, their tagline ‘aspire to inspire before you expire’ became synonymous with the above statement. This facilitated their thought process and was to be the basis of their upcoming collections.

Career Opportunities

A strong marksheet, coupled with their portfolio, saw them through one of the top brands in India, Shantanu and Nikhil, which was a dream come true. Taruni and Shubham began there as an intern and eventually acquired the position of an assistant designer for womenswear and menswear, respectively within two months of time. Following that, seemingly reflecting their ascension, the city seemed so much more alive and full of aspirations and dreams waiting to be discovered and chased. They endeavoured to make the most of every opportunity that came their way. There, they got maximum opportunities to show their talent and got to make various designs. Over time, they were made responsible of dealing with clients, understanding their requirements and ensuring delivery of good finished products. Handling clients independently made them realise different tastes of people from various walks of life and also how to develop a design from scratch i.e. from taking an order to delivering the finished garment correctly and on time. They also got to know about the various problems that occur during the design process and also how to rectify them to some extent. Thus, they became accustomed and learned to appreciate the different abilities this field demanded. Their endeavours were appreciated and their conviction to further understand the practical aspect of fashion design was deepened.


After Shantanu and Nikhil, Taruni worked in another fashion firm named Raa Design, where she was an Assistant Designer but was alongside managing and responsible for all the works personally including designing, management, marketing of merchandise, maintaining stock inventories, fabric, accessories and dyeing challans, dealing with clients and buyers. She also used to represent the brand independently in India and abroad as the company had buyers and stores in London.

This only strengthened their resolve in deciding that fashion is what they wanted to pursue for the rest of thier life.


In the midst of college, Taruni also had the chance to take up two, two month long internships over two years, which would round of her practical education in fashion. In 2010, after her first year in college, she got a chance to intern with Pearl Global Pvt. Ltd., a big export house, in which she was a part of the merchandising department, and got individual orders to handle from various buyers. In 2011, after her second year, she got to intern with Bora Knitwear Pvt. Ltd., the manufacturing unit of Woodland, where she was once again in the merchandising department, and got to know and be a part of the entire process, from the initial creative process, to the manufacturing stage.


As a firm believer in the power of possibilities and not in the limitations imposed upon them, they always strove to perform to the best of their capabilities. They have always felt the inner drive to push beyond their comfort zone and make their mark in every pursuit of life, no matter how small. As time passed by, they wanted to take this artform up as a career.
